552 heritage

Retired Lt. Col. William Schwertfeger spoke to members of the 552nd Air Control Wing on Tuesday in Fannin Hall about his distinguished Air Force career and the time he spent as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War. Colonel Schwertfeger was on an air strike mission on Feb. 16, 1972, when his F-4 received intense anti-aircraft fire and he was forced to eject over North Vietnam. He was then taken as a POW and was released during Operation Homecoming on March 28, 1973, after spending 407 days in captivity. (Air Force photo by Kelly White)
