Gas masks and fake blood were a common sight as over 180 Airmen from nine squadrons gathered in Dock two to participate in the first ATSO Rodeo of the year Jan 30.

The purpose of the ATSO (Ability to Survive and Operate) Rodeo is "to challenge knowledge of ATSO topics and to enhance combat skills required to survive and operate in wartime conditions," said Maj. Kathleen Hubscher, director of wing inspections and readiness, 552nd Air Control Wing.

Five teams from each of nine squadrons participated in five challenges: Self Aid/Buddy Care, Gas Mask ROE, Contamination Control Vehicle Covering, Litter Carry, and the Final Challenge, which was a combination of MOPP Level changes and physical training, she said.

"The points for the Final Challenge were based on Squadron Commander secret wagers so it was anyone's game!" said Major Hubscher.

Teams had good incentive to win, as Major Hubscher explained, "prizes for the top three were engraved belt buckles."

It was an exciting and spirited competition, but "the 552nd Maintenance Operations Squadron won the Final Challenge and the overall Rodeo - the 960th Airborne Air Control Squadron came in second and the 552nd Operations Support Squadron came in third," she said.

The Wing Inspection and Readiness shop is planning to host three more Rodeos between now and the Operational Readiness Inspection in November.

"The Rodeo is also designed to inspire esprit de corps throughout the wing," Major Hubscher said. "A lot of hard work went into making the Rodeo happen and I think everyone really enjoyed it."

"These events generate a little friendly competition among the squadrons while at the same time, they prepare the wing for contingency operations as well as the November inspection," she said.

Stay tuned for results from the next ATSO Rodeo coming soon.
